Based on my book “Backwoods Witchcraft,” this course will follow the old trails and by-ways of the Yarb Doctor for those who wish to reconnect with their mountain roots and family traditions.
(Starting Summer 2018.)
Every six months, I will take on five students to learn the ways of Appalachian Folk magic. This will not be a course of instruction and homework. No. The mountain witch knows connection and needs connection. We will all work in conjunction, and you will be instructed personally by me either in person or via the internet.
Lesson plans include herbs, harvesting, connecting with the land, planting by the signs etc. The course is planned in order to reacquaint you with the land and waters of these hills. The Yarb doctor knows the land he's on. Not by familiarity or the scene, but literally every detail. From the mayapple patch up the northern side of Buffalo mountain to the round stone beneath the elderberry bush in the field. He knows the spirit of the land, the old gnome by the willow stump or the spirit in the pool of the river beneath that overhanging rock. This course is designed to return you to the earth, quite literally.
You will learn the following in this course:
Stories and superstions of Appalachia and how they can aid in our craft and inform us
Tools of the Wooded Witch
Building relationships with plants and animals of the region
Working with different Spirits of Appalachia
Planting, growing and harvesting of plants, all by the signs
Preparing roots, leaves, blooms, bark etc.
Making tinctures, infusions, compresses, plasters etc. for herbal healing
Working the root through candles, sachets, tin cans and jars/bottles.
The making of traditional charms (includes the Peller's toe as it is sometimes called).
Blood stopping, Pegging, and other forms of healing
Rag work, tin cans, and taking care of those that harm us
And so much more!
The course is broken into three levels or pegs. Each level will prepare you for the knowledge and work of the next.
The first peg is Thoroughwort. Here you will learn basic herbalism (magical and medicinal), the basic workings of candles and lamps, creating sachet bags, Ancestor work etc. It is here that you will spend most of your time in nature, growing in relationship with your Ancestors, and learning the land you're on. You will also learn to work with different types of dirts and dust, household items, feathers, stones etc. We will also cover the native spirit folks of these hills and how best to approach them. You will also be trained to go into trance for the best effective magic.
The second peg is Mayapple. It is here that you will learn the virtues of the Mayapple: cleansing, fortune, healing, charm making, Spirit work etc. You will learn to make and use waters (natural and man made), you will learn the partnerships we have with the trees and animals and how their parts can aid us. You will learn the techniques of divination employed by the Mountain witch and how best to use them. You will also be taught how to counter tricks placed against you, forms of protection for the home/self, and send workings back.
The third and final peg is PawPaw. This where you will learn the old ways of blasting and crossing, of worting and sorting. You will be taught of the wisht and hood places, of walking the mists and speaking with the morning fog. It is here that the student will be taught the ways of the mountain witch, to live in all worlds of earth, sky, and water simultaneously. With but closing eyelids and a breathing prayer to the Maker, the Witch traverses to the "fog" as Mama called it. It is here that we speak with the Spirits, Ancestors, Angels, and Wee Folk. You will learn the safety precautions of Spirit work and how best to guard yourself.
We will have monthly meetings aside from our one-on-one meetings. This may take place in person or through group video chat.
You will be asked to do meditations and excersises. Everyone will do so. I don't care how experienced you say you are, degrees and titles do not give the witch her root. You will learn to focus, go into trance, and communicate with the Spirits. You will be trained to be constantly aware and focused, as the Yarb doctor needs to be conscious of his surrounds when alone in the mountains yet conscious of where his hand is grabbing. (Might be a snake instead of a vine).
We will have practice and excercises in person. These will be held outside or in, depending on the weather. When outside we will be in the country, at a park, on a mountain, or by the lake. You will need to know this land, what it has available, and what the area is like. You don't want to go to a crossroads to bury something in a neighborhood with not so friendly folks.
If in-person meetings cannot be made due to location restrictions, family issues etc. I will send out the plans via email. They will be divided and sent weekly. At the end of each week, we will have a group phone or video meeting to go over everyone’s experience, their success and set backs, and what they’ve learned so far.
This course will only be for 6 months, for the warm part of the year and is only admitting five students. I prefer smaller group to make it close and personal, so help you learn more, and make sure you’re understanding.
Tuition for 6 months is $700 per person. Payment plans of $117 a month are available, but are strictly held. If payment is not received, you will be removed from the course. These funds will pay for supplies and materials as bottles, herbs and fabric can get pricey. This also pays for my time spent making the course emails and setting up meetings.
Each student will will receive a Binder in which they will record their learnings and experiences.
****Note: Appalachian Hoodoo is primarily Christian and will be taught as such. Charms and works will be done in the name of the Holy Spirit.
Come learn the wild ways of the weird-doctor and stick your toes in Mother Mountain's soil.
Paired with this Mentorship, I will soon be holding classes at Spiritual Awakens Community Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. Visit them at www.facebook.com/SpiritualAwakeningsCC/ Each class will lightly cover a particular subject such as candles and lamps, oils, wildcrafting etc. The price per glass will vary depending on the subject and materials, but will range between $10-$20 per person.
Fill in the Application Form below for the course. In the text box give the following information:
Ties to Appalachia
Experience, Time in the Occult field, and age (no one under 18.)
Allergies to plants or animals
Your feelings regarding cursing work, as we will be learning this. American folk magic does not adhere to the Rede, instead it follows the biblical "eye for an eye", so take note of that now.
